Coronavirus Update: MORE INFORMATION
Mammography is the best available screening test for breast cancer, and it continues to evolve. Traditional mammography was performed using film, similar to an old film camera, and produced two dimensional (2-D) images of the breast.
Today’s three-dimensional (3-D) digital mammograms provide 3-D images of the breast from many different angles. The older form of mammography only produced images from the front and the side, hence the designation of 2-D. Finding abnormalities in the breast tissue may be easier with 3-D technology. If a clinician wants to see 2-D images, they can be created from the 3-D mammogram without the need for the the patient to return for a second test.
Physicians East began offering 3-D digital mammography at its Arlington Boulevard location in September 2015.
