Everyone should get the flu shot each year to protect themselves against the current year's flu strain. However, there are groups that are more susceptible to the effects of the flu. These groups are strongly encouraged to get the flu shot each and every year.
Each year, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) develops the flu vaccine to protect against three to four different strains of the flu that are most likely to spread during the current year. Through complex monitoring of the flu virus, the CDC officials determine which strains will be selected for the vaccine. This is an extremely effective method of preventing the spread of the virus and in only a handful of years has the vaccine not been 100% effective.
No, it does not. This is a common misconception of the flu vaccine. The flu shot does not contain the live virus. In some cases, the flu shot does contain the flu, but the strains have been inactivated. The nasal spray does contain the live virus; however, the strain has been weakened significantly and cannot give you the flu. It's not uncommon to experience flu-like symptoms for a day after the vaccine has been administered, but these symptoms quickly dissipate and aren't as severe as the flu.
To learn more about the flu vaccine, you can talk with Pharmacist, Randy Driggers at Pharmacy East during the hours of 9:00 am to 11:00 am or 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
