About

Dr. Sara R. Cowles, DO, an accomplished Hematology & Oncology professional, will be joining Physicians East in July 2024. She pursued a Fellowship in Hematology & Oncology at East Carolina University Health Medical Center, where she actively engaged in innovative medical research and provided compassionate patient care.

Her medical journey began at Campbell University Jerry M. Wallace School of Osteopathic Medicine, where she graduated cum laude with a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree in 2017. Before that, she earned Bachelor’s degrees in Philosophy and Biomedical Science from Grand Valley State University in Allendale, MI.

Throughout her career, Dr. Cowles has garnered recognition for her exceptional contributions, including prestigious awards like the Gold Humanism Honor Society Thank a Resident Award and the Banting & Best Endocrinology Resident of the Year Award.

Beyond clinical practice, Dr. Cowles is actively involved in groundbreaking research, particularly in areas such as lung cancer surveillance and bleeding disorders in women. She has presented her research at various national and international conferences and contributed to esteemed medical journals.

Driven by a commitment to leadership and service, Dr. Cowles has served on committees such as the Resident & Fellow Council at Vidant Health GME and the Diabetes Steering Committee at Vidant Medical Center. Her involvement also extends to holding leadership positions within medical organizations like the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the American Society of Hematology (ASH), and the American Medical Association (AMA).

Dr. Cowles’ dedication to advancing medical knowledge and improving patient outcomes underscores her passion for excellence in Hematology & Oncology. She currently is a Volunteer Staff Physician at the Pitt County Care Clinic and is a Junior Grant Reviewer with the American Society of Hematology.
