PillCam® Capsule Endoscopy

Woman's hand holding pill camThe experienced gastroenterologists at Physicians East are trained in the use of a procedure called PillCam® capsule endoscopy. By using a PillCam your physician is able to visualize the esophagus, stomach, small intestine and colon using a small disposable capsule fitted with an even smaller camera. It's amazing the things technology can do these days. This serves as an alternative to traditional endoscopy, colonoscopy or flexible sigmoidoscopy

During the procedure, the patient is fitted with a PillCam sensor belt, which is worn around the waist and over the clothing. The patient then swallows the capsule – about the size of a multivitamin – with a glass of water. The patient is then allowed to continue with his or her daily activities. A follow-up appointment is scheduled and the information obtained by the PillCam can be retrieved from the sensor belt. Don't worry, the PillCam capsule passes naturally through your system with a bowel movement so there is no removal process. This usually takes approximately 24 to 72 hours.

Undergoing PillCam capsule endoscopy is more convenient than traditional procedures because it is minimally invasive, does not require sedation and has minimal to no recovery time. There is also minimal preparation compared to traditional procedures that may require a patient to take several laxatives or alter his or her diet the day before. In addition, the PillCam technology allows physicians to view the entire small intestine, which is not possible with traditional endoscopy and provides more detailed images than other traditional procedures.
